Through the stories of Israel asking for a king (1 Samuel 8), Paul’s teaching about governing authorities (Romans 13), and Jesus’ words about giving to Caesar and to God (Mark 12), Scripture reminds us that political authority has a role—but never the final word. Section III of Faith and Civic Life: Seeking the Well-Being of All invites us to approach government with gratitude, humility, and watchfulness as we consider how the Constitution’s vision of “We the People” can serve the well-being of all.
